Tragic love as showcased in Greek mythology
Collection Description
Our project revolves around tragic love in Greek mythology. We find this very interesting due to how it has influenced popular culture, and how the themes found in tragic love echo through to today’s media. We collected art of Orpheus and Eurydice, Paris and Helen, Adonis and Venus, Apollo and Hyacinthus, Jason and Medea, Narcissus and Echo, Pyramus and Thisbe, Achilles and Patroclus, and Ariadne and Theseus — all couples whose stories ended in tragedy. The art in this collection was created from the 15th century through the 19th century. This collection is aimed towards those fascinated with Greek mythology and how common themes in media today have origins in tragedy from long ago. Our collection can be used as a starting point for further research into the tragedies we compiled, for a scholarly or general audience. People can also use it as a database to find media showcasing specific art regarding tragic love. Our collection is artwork, mostly made up of paintings and etchings, with a few other mediums scattered throughout. We pulled from many different museums and galleries around the world, including the British Museum in London, England, the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.
